How to Organize Pickleball Open Play in Taipei

Four people playing a doubles game of pickleball on an outdoor court

Most pickleball open plays in Taipei run on a Line group and one person’s good memory. It works fine until the game fills up, which is exactly when you need it to.

Host your pickleball open play

Set the time and court. Players RSVP from one link.

What an open play is, and what it is not

An open play (球聚 or 球敘 in Chinese, 暢打 if you want to sound local) is a rotation, not a match. Pickleball is played in doubles, so a court holds four people. Everyone else leaves their paddles in a stack by the court, four to a group, and when a game ends the next group goes on. Nobody has to arrive with a partner, and that is the whole point.

The word you will hear for gathering people is 揪團. If you are the one doing the gathering, you are the organizer, whether or not you wanted the job.

Count in fours

Everything else follows from the court. Four players per court means eight on two courts and twelve on three. A few extras are fine, because someone always wants to sit out and someone always turns up late. As a rule of thumb, five or six people per court is comfortable. Past seven, they spend more time in the line than on the court.

Seven players is not an open play. It is a difficult conversation about who sits out. Set a minimum (eight for two courts, say) and a maximum, and tell people when you will decide whether the game is on.

Pick a place: park, school gym or private club

Taipei has three kinds of place. The right one depends on how much you want to rely on someone else’s schedule.

  • Public outdoor courts. Free. Zhishan Park (至善公園) in Shilin has open play on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and weekend afternoons, on the association’s court listing. The hours are not yours to set and they change, so check them before you tell anyone to show up.
  • School gyms and sports centers. Indoor, so rain stops mattering, at roughly NT$150 to NT$350 per person for a session. Hours and booking rules differ from one site to the next.
  • Private pickleball clubs. Indoor and easy to book. Most clubs we checked in October 2026 charge between NT$700 and NT$1,300 an hour for a court, and a few in the city center charge over NT$2,000. Prices move, so confirm before you publish.

Some of these places, on the map. A pin on a park or a school is the place, not the exact court.

Whichever you choose, keep it for a few weeks before you change it. Regulars are made by a place they can find without scrolling. The full list of courts, with hours and prices, is in where to play pickleball in Taipei.

Split the court fee without the awkward chat

At NT$1,200 an hour and eight players, the court costs NT$150 each. Said before the RSVP, that is a price. Said after the game, it is a request, and requests get negotiated.

So write it in the event description: the total, how many people it is split between, and how it is collected. If paddles are free or for rent, say that too. Beginners will want to know and often will not ask.

Mix levels, or don’t

Pickleball is easy to start and slow to master, so a first-timer and a tournament regular can end up on the same court. Mixed levels work when games are short and people know what to expect. When the gap gets wide, some clubs sort players by level and run separate courts.

You can do the same with two events, one for beginners and one for any level, instead of one game that frustrates everybody. Put the level in the title. Nobody reads descriptions.

Rain, heat and typhoons

Outdoor courts cancel for rain, and Taipei has plenty of it, plus a typhoon season. Write the rule once (“we cancel if the city suspends work and classes”) and put it in the event, so you are not answering forty messages on the day. The Taipei guide covers the seasons month by month.

Common questions

What is pickleball open play?

A rotation game. Players take turns on the courts in doubles, and nobody needs to bring a partner. In Taiwan it is usually called 球聚, 球敘 or 暢打.

How many players do I need?

Four per court. Plan for eight on two courts, and set a minimum so you can call the game off in time.

How much should I charge per player?

Divide the court fee by the confirmed players. A private club’s court is mostly NT$700 to NT$1,300 an hour, and a sports center session costs players about NT$150 to NT$350 each. The prices and hours of each place are in where to play pickleball in Taipei.

Do I need my own paddle?

Not always. Many clubs include paddles, and some rent them for a small fee. Ask before you tell beginners to buy one.

Where can I hold a free open play?

On public outdoor courts such as Zhishan Park and the Jingmei riverside, which have fixed hours. Check the current hours in the association’s court listing, and see the full list of courts.

What happens if it rains?

Decide before the first game. Many organizers cancel outdoor games when it rains or when the city suspends work and classes, and tell players through the same link they used to join.

Is FitHere free for organizers?

Yes. Hosting on FitHere has no monthly organizer fee, and you do not need to create a group first.
